More About Lime

Lime is one of the common, mouth watering and famous citrus fruits all over the world. Citrus aurantifolia is the scientific name of Lime. This evergreen tree belongs to Rutaceae family and first found in the Himalayan region of India. Limes are native to South east Asia.

This fruit are typically round, green in colour when unripe and when ripped it becomes yellow in colour, 3-6 cm in diameter and contain sour, acidic pulp. The size of a lemon tree is minimum 8 feet in height, the flowers are small and white. The thin rind of a lemon contains volatile essential oil including the terpene limonene and citral. There are many varieties of Limes, different in colour, size and shape like Australian dessert lime, Palestine sweet lime, Bearss lime, Australian finger lime etc. In Bengali the Lime is called "Lebu", in Hindi "Nimboo", The two most popular variety is "Pati" which means small and the other is "Kagzi Nimboo"

This is not only good source of vitamin C with Ascorbic acid, but also an excellent source of free citric acid, natural sugar, calcium and phosphorus. . Vitamin C helps to prevent scurvy, maintaining the health of teeth and others bone of the body, aids the healing of wounds. It also prevents the decay and loosening of the teeth, dental caries, toothache, bleeding of the gums and fragility of bones.

The fresh juice of Lime is used as a medicine from the ancient time in India. In Vedas, lime had been mentioned as a sacred fruit.

Lime juice and rind is used in cakes, pastries, candies, Jams, Jellies, detergents and perfumes.
